The origins of Thai Yoga massage, called Nuad Boran, can be traced back 2,500 years ago to India and the spread of Buddhism. The founding father of Thai Massage, Jivaka Kumarbhaccha, was a celebrated yogi and doctor in the ancient healing traditions of Ayurveda who was called upon to treat kings and princes. Of all the people he attended to, the most honorary was the Buddha. As Buddhism spread to Thailand, Indian Buddhist envoys were sent to Thailand to set up temples or wats. Traditional Thai massage developed over centuries within Buddhist temples through monks that practiced this healing art. The thai temple, or wat, operated as a health center for the people, as health and spirit are thought to be closely intertwined.
Thai Yoga Massage is traditionally performed on the floor fully clothed (except for shoes and socks) in clothing that is loose and comfortable. In receiving Thai Yoga Massage, one is also receiving the benefits of the practices of Yoga and Ayurveda. A Thai Yoga Massage session also incorporates tai-chi like movements, palming and thumbing along the energy 'Sen' lines and pressure points, gentle assisted stretching, yoga poses and breath work. The practitioner uses their thumbs, palms, elbows, knees and feet for a comprehensive full body treatment -- starting from the feet and working towards the head. The experience is a meditative flowing "dance" around and with the recipient's body, without the recipient having to do any of the work!
